The steelmaking company has established an integral strategy in favour of sustainability in all phases of its value chain through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
The adoption of this commitment to sustainability is an implicit part of Sidenor’s business philosophy. This responsibility is integrated in the entire value chain and extends to various action areas, such as the people, environment, society in general as well as business ethics and transparency.
In this context, the steelmaking company has approved new objectives to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, which have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, a collaboration between the non-profit organization Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the World Wide Fund for Nature.
The recent approval of these objectives by Sidenor does not only represent its commitment to developing a more environmentally friendly activity, but is also supported by a strong scientific basis. More precisely, by aligning with the target of maintaining global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius and complying with the Paris Agreement objectives, the steelmaking company demonstrates its continuous contribution to mitigating the climate change effects.
In addition, this commitment goes beyond direct (Scope 1) emissions, which result directly from the company’s activity, and extends to more ambitious objectives in order to address indirect emissions, which are linked to the electricity consumed (Scope 2) and the value chain (Scope 3), establishing an integral strategy in favour of sustainability in all phases.
Specifically, Sidenor has set as its main objective for 2033 a Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction by 61.5%, while Scope 3 emissions will be reduced by 32.5% compared with 2021.
In this way, as explained by the steel company’s chief sustainability officer, Sara Jainaga, “the commitment adopted by Sidenor reflects the strong belief that its future is closely linked to the respect for the environment, the people who work in it and the society in general. In this sense, we have reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 62% since 2005, even exceeding the objectives set for 2030, which represents a great deal of progress in our roadmap towards decarbonization”.
