Sidenor participated in the Green Steel World Conference, which took place in Essen, Germany, on June 26th-27th, where professionals from all over the world gathered to exchange knowledge and ideas on how to create a cleaner and more environmentally friendly future for the steel industry. Sergio Tudanca, Commercial Director of the Automotive Business Unit, gave the lecture entitled “Sidenor’s path towards sustainability”, highlighting the company’s transformation towards a more sustainable steel production, with the main objective to mitigate the carbon footprint in all processes and the entire value chain and thus manage to reach carbon neutrality in a close future.

The main message of the conference is the confirmation that, in a context where regulatory pressure and customer requirements are continuously increasing, the big challenges of the steel industry are to find the right decarbonization pace and develop an efficient ecodesign process. This, however, implies added costs – which is why the entire value chain needs to assume that the decarbonization process implies added CAPEX & OPEX in order to reach the Net Zero objective.

Other highlighted messages of the conference are the following:

  • Product vision under the perspective of the life cycle analysis: The steel industry in the EU leads the development of decarbonization plans, focussing on its direct emissions as well as indirect emissions linked to electrical consumption. Although this vision is necessary, it is however incomplete if the product vision under the perspective of the life cycle analysis is not integrated.
  • Ecodesign and emission reduction: An efficient ecodesign process allows to focus on where the highest levels of carbon emissions are generated – usually in the product use phase. Sidenor has developed steels that allow to reduce the footprint of its upstream and downstream indirect emissions, even without improvements in its direct emissions. The difference is to focus a strategy on the product carbon footprint and not only on the organization carbon footprint.
  • Measurement of the product environmental footprint: The first step towards appropriate ecodesign is to measure the product environmental footprint. Since 2017, Sidenor has been calculating this footprint for over 35,000 references, thus managing to provide the CO2 emissions linked to each source stream in each production process phase, both upstream and core. This allows to prioritize efforts and measure the results in the design of new steels / new processes.
  • 100% renewable electrical energy by 2025: Sidenor has committed to reducing its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 61.5% by 2033 (reference year: 2021). As part of this strategy, Sidenor’s total electrical energy consumption will be of 100% renewable energy as of 2025.
