SIDENOR I+D, in collaboration with TECNALIA and UPV-EHU, has participated in the project ABADE (Low Density Steels), funded by the ELKARTEK Research Programme of the Basque Government
ABADE project investigates new grades of low density steels for forged components. Low density steels are Fe-C-Mn-Al alloys, with a microstructure either ferritic, or austenitic, or duplex, that reduce steel density from the current 7,85 g/cm3 down to values 6,5-7 g/cm3. A strength over 1100 MPa and an acceptable ductility would allow a weight reduction near 30% of forged parts. However, the complex thermochemical reactions at high temperature of these new low density steels require a deeper research to make possible their industrial implementation.
