Sidenor participates in the SCALE-UP project, an initiative of the HAZITEK program of the Basque Government, which seeks to develop an innovative methodology to validate the reliability of materials without the need to use large test benches

The growth of the offshore wind industry has brought different technical challenges that, above all, are linked to the reliability of large-scale mechanical and structural components. As wind turbines increase in size, ensuring the strength and durability of their parts becomes essential for their correct operation and maintenance.

In this context, Sidenor and Sidenor R&D participate in the SCALE-UP project, an initiative of the HAZITEK program of the Basque Government, which seeks to develop an innovative methodology to validate the reliability of these components without the need to use large test benches.

With financing from the Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of the Basque Government and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the project seeks to address the challenges derived from the growth of wind turbines and optimize validation processes.

Within the framework of this initiative, Sidenor’s work focuses on optimizing the induction hardening treatment of steels intended for fastenings for offshore wind turbines. Through this process, through a combination of experimental trials and simulation models, we seek to improve the behavior and durability of these critical components throughout their useful life, ensuring their resistance in extreme conditions.

In addition to improving the mechanical and microstructural properties of the materials, the induction hardening treatment also contributes to the decarbonization of the production process. Specifically, the use of renewable energies in this thermal treatment reduces the environmental impact and allows progress towards a more efficient steel industry, a solution aligned with Sidenor’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the steel industry.

The SCALE-UP project, led by NABLA WIND HUB, gathers various participating companies and technology centers that collaborate in the implementation of advanced validation and optimization methodologies for wind components. This cooperation will generate new knowledge and technical solutions to improve the reliability and efficiency of large wind turbines.
