Sidenor, on its way towards digital transformation, is studying the implementation of new technologies in its production processes together with the Basque start-up Muon Systems, which won the Sidenor challenge. For this purpose, the steel company, a leader in its sector, has based on the Bizkaia Open Future_ programme, an initiative supported by the Provincial Council of Biskay as well as Telefónica, in order to speed up the digital transformation of companies on the territory.
17 start-ups, SMEs, universities and technology centres from the Basque Country, the rest of the country as well as 3 from all over the world participated in Sidenor’s challenge, which was launched by Bizkaia Open Future_. The winning solution, presented by Muon Systems, would require the use of muon tomography, a brand-new technique which allows to look into objects or surroundings without damaging, modifying or physically accessing them, in order to improve processes in Sidenor’s steel activity.
The Basque start-up, which is located in the BIC Bizkaia Ezkerraldea of Barakaldo, an incubator of companies of the Provincial Council of Biscay and the Basque Country, will perform a real-time pilot project, supported by Sidenor. It will also obtain a EUR15,000 prize and have access to the aids provided by the Provincial Council of Biscay, provided the related conditions are respected. One week before the winner was announced, the three short-selected proposals visited Sidenor’s facilities, where they had the opportunity of getting first-hand knowledge of the steel company’s needs, participated in various meetings with the board of directors and the technical team, and could defend their innovative proposal.
