Sidenor is involved in a project that represents a technological and industrial milestone by offering pioneering solutions for the comprehensive recovery of slag, ensuring its use in products of the same or higher quality than conventional ones, and positioning the company as a benchmark in sustainability, innovation and circularity in the steel industry.

This is the SLAGVAL project, “New, optimized and sustainable slag recovery processes for the manufacture of concrete and bituminous mixtures for high-value-added applications”. The main objective is to reduce the amount of steel slag waste sent to landfills and improve its quality for use in higher-value-added applications.

Sidenor, together with Viuda de Sainz, is working on this project to optimize slag cooling and treatment processes, significantly improving its technical and environmental properties. The initiative covers black and white slag and also incorporates innovative demetallization processes that allow for metal recovery, reintroducing it into the manufacturing cycle of special steels. These improvements will open up new application possibilities in more demanding markets such as railway ballast, radiation protection concrete, bituminous mixtures and high-performance mortars.

The expected results are highly satisfactory:

  • A 50% increase in the amount of slag recovered for higher-value applications.
  • A 90% increase in metal recovery.
  • A reduction in the volume of slag sent to landfills, moving towards 95% recovery of the waste generated at Sidenor by 2030.

The SLAGVAL project is a beneficiary of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) call for grants to promote circular economy in companies for 2022, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP) financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

The Circular Economy PERTE (Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation) call promotes ecodesign, material reuse, improved waste management and the digitalization of processes, fostering a more resource-efficient, resilient and low-carbon economy.
